Digitization arrives at IAA

66. IAA Commercial Vehicles in Hanover

In a few days the IAA Commercial Vehicles starts in Hanover. With the “new mobility world logistics” the fair intends to set new accents.

With platooning and self-propelled trucks, commercial vehicle manufacturers have written headlines in the past few months. There was no trade magazine, which did not report in detail on the European action of the manufacturers. Now the new technologies will once again be presented to the public at the IAA Commercial Vehicles in Hanover.

Of course, from September 22 to 29 still plenty of other world and European premieres can be seen. “There will be 320 world and over 100 European premieres.” stresses Matthias Wissmann, President of the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). For the first time by the initiative “new mobility world logistics” the fair will set a new focus, dealing with the megatrends of the logistics industry. This mainly concerns the networked and automated driving. With the platooning action they have already proven that the trucks in many areas are equipped with the technical know-how. The eyes and ears of the vehicles are then multifunctional cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors.

Ideas, concepts and first solutions are presented at the IAA at many stands. In the outdoor area, the exhibitors will even present their new techniques already. The manufacturers, however, have to convince many of the visitors of the technology and the benefits that it brings. Because for many, the automated driving is still far away from the stressful everyday life.
The reality is often quite different: crowded streets, kilometers of traffic jams and a tight schedule. The transport and logistics companies therefore need concrete and rapidly implementable solutions.

Instead, the industry is hoping for another trend, which is also part of the new mobility: Alternative power. Ideas like the electric truck for distribution transport are probably more interesting for the practitioners. Also the advancements of commercial vehicles powered by gas sound promising. Because the excessive particulate levels in cities already at the beginning of the year, are putting the politicians in a tight spot. It therefore only is a matter of time before the first driving bans for trucks in big cities will be imposed. Then low-emission vehicles will be in demand.

Also part of the new mobility are transport services. Perhaps it is this area, the visitors will pay particular attention to this year. Because with the increasing networking and digitization processes can be improved and become more efficient. This applies not only to the vehicle and fleet management. Also, the driver and job management becomes increasingly mobile and could simplify the stressful everyday life. Many solutions already exist and are immediately applicable in reality. Thus they are much more advanced than automatically moving vehicles. A visit to the IAA Commercial Vehicles will therefore be worthwhile in any case.
