In Austria between November 1st and April 15th of the following year winter tires are mandatory for trucks over 3.5 tonnes, as well as a snow chain obligation. Severe penalties are due for infringement. Police Chief Commissioner Christoph Becker informs.
In Austria, the driver always bears part of the responsibility – he must carry snow chains and trucks >3.5 tons must be equipped with M+S tires – in wintry road conditions coercive measures are applied (prohibition of continuation). This also applies when winter conditions occur in the further course of his route.
Minimum profile depth of tires:
- Normal tire vehicles up to 3.5 t: 1.6 mm
- Vehicles over 3.5 t: 2 mm
- Winter tires vehicles up to 3.5 t: 4 mm (radial)
- Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes: 5 mm (radial)
